The Culture Of Jakarta

Indonesia is a country with thousands islands and cultures. Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia has many interesting cultures, arts, traditional dances and many more.

The native Jakarta is Batavia or we call them Betawi. However, nowadays there are many tribes from all over Indonesia regions stay in Jakarta. You can see Javanese, Sundanese or even Chinese live peacefully in Jakarta.

Yes, We could see all cultures mixed in harmony grow up in Jakarta. But which is the original cultures of Jakarta.

Here are some of them

1. Traditional House

The traditional house of Jakarta is Kebaya. It shaped like a sloping shield and continued with a slighter gable

The building can be a stilt house and also extended on the land.

There was a large yard with the outer fence. The form is very simple, built with carved wood.

2. Traditional Dress

The headgear and coat, combined with trousers, and batik cloth entwined the waist. It is perfected with a traditional stiletto. You would look like a hero wearing the Jakarta traditional dress.

For the women, kebaya cloth, a long shawl, and batik painted cloth.

3. Traditional Dance

Many traditional dances in Jakarta we could mention, such as Topeng (mask) dance.
It was a sacred dance, performed in wedding party, or other sacred events. The dancers wear masks and tell the stories through motions.

The other traditional dance is Cokek Dance. In the past time, the dance is performed by Chinese landlords and accompanied by Gambang Kromong music.

4. Traditional Music
There are several traditional music of Jakarta :

Gambang Kromong
It is a combination between a local and Chinese music, as seen from the music instruments used, such as Chinese stringed instrument named Kongahyan, Tehyan and Sukong. While the Betawi instruments like Gambang, kromong, krecek.

Tanjidor
Tanjidor is a Jakarta orchestra music. It is started from 19th century.
